Scott #10, SG #9. Ten
pence vermilion, imperforated, watermark large star, tied by tidy black
bars cancellation to a cover sent from Galle to Sevenoaks, Kent, and
re-addressed to Ferns, Wexford, Ireland. In front is the red Galle
c.d.s. of September 10, 1863, London transit of October 29, 1863, and
the red boxed "REDIRECTED / POSTAGE UNPAID". On reverse is a
Seveanoaks arrival c.d.s. The stamp is huge for this issue, with even
margins all around, the cover has numerous small faults, and the flap
has been partially removed. Only about five covers are recorded bearing
the ten pence stamp, mostly with cut-into stamps, making this one of the
great rarities of classical Ceylon. (B.P.A. Certificate of 1988.) |
